The owner of Cherry Lanes Arcade Bar, Moira Callan, is passionate about the need for affordable housing for Northeast Wisconsin local worker force. Door County is a beautiful place, but finding affordable housing in this popular tourist destination, Sturgeon Bay, is challenging. Thankfully, for the large 7,500 square feet of unused space that sits above our arcade bar, we can make a difference in our community.
Funding the fun is a collaborative effort
Our project received a significant boost thanks to a $160,000 loan from the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA). Combining this with additional $250,000 from Door County’s Workforce Housing Lending Corp. and a bank loan, Callan is committed to making this dream a reality.
Every time a patron comes in to bowl, every time they play a game, every time they buy a beer, it all goes to the housing development. – Moira Callan
So the next time you’re craving some arcade fun or delicious pizza, know that your visit is contributing to a brighter future for local workforce. We like to say, we’re not just striking up some fun, we’re striking a blow against the affordable housing shortage.
What can our future tenants expect?
The project will build eight units: five single-bedroom and three studio apartments. The monthly rent for each unit will be between $800-$950 per month. This falls in line with the state of Wisconsin’s definition of affordable housing for Door County.
Amenities will consist of:
- Coin operated laundry
- Storage facility
- Parking
- … and of course, having an awesome hangout spot below.
We expect to start renting these units in early 2026.
Follow our progress
We’ll proudly showcase the exciting progress on our website and social media pages as we ‘break ground’ in late April and transform this space into new homes.
We’ll share every milestone, displaying behind-the-scenes moments, and insights into our creative process, allowing our community to engage with our journey and celebrate our achievements alongside us.
