Supporting Local Art: Set Sail in Sturgeon Bay Project 2025

We’re especially thrilled to introduce you to the artist, Cambree Ney, behind our beautiful sailboat, from Waterford, WI. Cambree’s journey into art is truly inspiring. She started young with crayons or colored pencils in hand. An incredible high school art teacher fostered her growth and opened her eyes to mediums like oil pastels and encouraged her artistic pursuits. This passion led her to UW-Stout, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design, all while continuing to hone her fine art skills and eventually diving into painting.

You might have seen her work from last year’s “Bass Around the Bay” project. During a fishing trip to Sturgeon Bay a few years back, she discovered the painted bass fish scattered around town and knew she had to be a part of it. She participated last year with a beautiful sunflower-themed fish, a heartfelt dedication to her late grandpa who loved sunflowers.

For this year’s “Set Sail” project, Cambee wanted to create something that truly represented Door County — the cherry! She depicted the various growth stages of a cherry tree on the sailboat’s sails, creating a stunning and dynamic piece that captures the delicate beauty of the blossoms from bud to full bloom. How perfect it found its home in front of Cherry Lanes?!

Bringing a piece of this scale to life wasn’t without its challenges. Cambree navigated the intricacies of painting each individual sail, switching between mounting them on the base and laying them flat, and patiently waiting for each side to dry before flipping them. It’s a testament to her dedication that this intricate project, filled with beautiful detail, took her an estimated 30 hours to complete!

We can’t wait for you to see her cherry blossom sailboat in real life. You can also view all the other incredible pieces in “Set Sail in Sturgeon Bay” around downtown Sturgeon Bay through out the summer. It’s a fantastic way to experience the artistic spirit of our community. When you’re out exploring the art, stop in Cherry Lanes Arcade Bar for some drinks. You can also have fun and enjoy games!
